We get asked all the time why we chose bamboo as the basis for the fabric we use in our post surgery range of underwear. Our answer is always the same "how long have you got?"
When we set out to design our range of post surgery underwear, we spoke to 80 women who had undergone treatment for breast cancer. Their number one complaint about what was already on the market was that it was hot, itchy and uncomfortable. So initially we set out to find a fabric that was comfortable and breathable. But what we found with bamboo was so much more than that.
We love the reaction of people who pick up one of our bras or briefs for the first time, they are almost always bowled over by the sheer softness of the fabric. We understand that if you have just undergone surgery you need underwear that offers an extra level of comfort. You need a fabric that won't rub, chafe or irritate wounds or sensitive skin. Our unique bamboo fabric mix is kind to your skin, it is so soft and gentle you can forget your wearing it.
Post surgery infection can not only prolong recovery but, in the case of breast cancer treatment, it can delay further treatment such as chemotherapy, so it is something patients really want to avoid. Bamboo fibre contains bamboo-kun, which is a naturally occurring agent that is anti-microbial and pest and fungi resistant. Our bamboo fabric mix was independently tested at University College Dublin's School of Engineering against two bacteria that mimic those most commonly found in surgical site infections. The fabric proved 92-97% resistant to those bacteria. This means when worn next to the skin, it will prevent the growth of the bacteria reducing the risk of post surgical infection.
Wicking & Absorbency
Wicking refers to how quickly a fabric draws moisture away from the skin, absorbency refers to the amount of liquid a fabric can soak up. If you're undergoing chemotherapy or endocrine therapy, you may experience hot flushes. Or if you're undergoing radiotherapy, you may have inflamed, irritated or broken skin. In either case, you need a fabric that will draw away and hold any perspiration so that you can stay cool, dry and comfortable.
Breathability is an important factor in the comfort of underwear. In independent testing, our bamboo fabric mix proved just as breathable as 100% cotton meaning that it will allow excess heat and moisture escape and your skin to breathe.
Not only is bamboo kinder to you, but it's kinder to the planet too. It is a sustainable resource because it is very fast growing, can be harvested without damage to the soil and can grow on land unsuitable for other agriculture/forestry. Unlike cotton, bamboo does not require any pesticides, herbicides or fertilizers in its cultivation. And bamboo plants absorb about 5 times the amount of carbon dioxide and produces about 35% more oxygen than an equivalent stand of trees.
All in all, we think bamboo is pretty amazing, it has so many wonderful properties and once you experience it, we think you'll be smitten too!
