Pregnancy & Sleep | 3 Top Tips

During pregnancy, achieving a good, comfortable night's sleep can feel like a distant memory, an urban myth of a previous life before everything changed. "Get your sleep in now before the baby comes" seems to be the favorite advice shared with you by family, friends, and often plain old strangers on the street.

During pregnancy, achieving a good, comfortable night's sleep can feel like a distant memory, an urban myth of a previous life before everything changed. "Get your sleep in now before the baby comes" seems to be the favorite advice shared with you by family, friends, and often plain old strangers on the street.

That's great advice if you didn't have an ever-growing human in your womb. Pair that up with the back pain, aching feet, swollen fingers, sore breasts, and restricted sleeping position availability, and getting a good night's sleep is mission impossible.

I've experienced the third trimester of pregnancy in a heatwave, so I felt compelled to share my top 3 tips on making the nighttime less of a nightmare, and as comfortable as possible.

1. Get Yourself a Pregnancy Pillow

I don't think I would have slept a wink without one. Those big, long, super soft pillows are a lifesaver when your sleeping positions are limited. They can be adjusted to whatever feels most comfortable, whether that's to support your bump, wrap your legs around it, hug your neck, or all of the above. Game changer.

2. Don't Underestimate a Simple Handheld Fan

Tossing, turning, weighing more than ever before and getting up to pee 452 times can make for one sweaty night. Having a mini fan in the room to keep you cool can work wonders. This comes in handy through labor too, so pop it on your hospital bag checklist, it's definitely worth the purchase. Ideally, get a rechargeable one with a little stand so that you can keep it on your bedside table as you drift off into dreamland. Amazing on the super hot, humid nights.

3. Invest in the Best Bedding

Sometimes, it's the bedding that causes the main issue. Invest in bedding that's been created with a high-quality material like bamboo. Bamboo bedding is highly breathable and as soft as silk without the slippiness. We spend so much of our lives in bed, but this is definitely an area that gets overlooked. Especially as a new mamma, so prepare for the journey/life ahead and create a bed you love getting into, long after your beautiful baby arrives.
